About the session

Artificial Intelligence plays an increasingly important role in the publishing lifecycle, from plagiarism checking through supporting peer review to potentially automatically generated manuscripts. During this exciting event, we will hear from three experts in Artificial Intelligence research who will address what AI is, how it can currently support scholarly publishing, and what the future might look like. Concerns regarding privacy and transparency will be discussed as well. Bring your questions and your curiosity to Ask the Experts about publishing and AI!

Speakers

  • Professor of Algorithmic Data Science at the University of Amsterdam

Paul Groth is Professor of Algorithmic Data Science at the University of Amsterdam where he leads the Intelligent Data Engineering Lab (INDElab). He holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Southampton (2007) and has done research at the University of Southern California, the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and Elsevier Labs. His research focuses on intelligent systems for dealing with large amounts of diverse contextualized knowledge with a particular focus on web and science applications. This includes research in data provenance, data integration and knowledge sharing. Paul is scientific director of the UvA’s Data Science Center. Additionally, he is co-scientific director of two Innovation Center for Artificial Intelligence (ICAI) labs: The AI for Retail (AIR) Lab - a collaboration between UvA and Ahold Delhaize; and the Discovery Lab - a collaboration between Elsevier, the University of Amsterdam and VU University Amsterdam.
  • VP Research Collaborations, Elsevier

Anita de Waard (she/her) is VP of Research Collaborations at Elsevier. Her work focuses on working with academic and industry partners on projects pertaining to progressing modes and frameworks for scholarly communication. Since 1997, she has worked on bridging the gap between science publishing and computational and information technologies: efforts include working on a semantic model for research papers, co-founding "FORCE11: The Future of Research Communications and E-Science" (Force11.org), and supporting the development of standards and models for research data management and a series of workshops on Scholarly Document Processing, https://sdproc.org/, Anita has a degree in low-temperature physics from Leiden University and worked in Moscow before joining Elsevier as a physics publisher in 1988; she hails from the Netherlands and lives in a forest in Vermont.
  • Assistant Professor, University of Washington Information School

Lucy Lu Wang is Assistant Professor at the University of Washington Information School. She is also Adjunct in Computer Science & Engineering and a Visiting Scientist at the Allen Institute for AI (AI2). Her research uses natural language processing and data science techniques to make sense of scientific and research output. Specifically, she investigates NLP methods for understanding biomedical text, systems to help us make better and more data-driven care decisions, and how text analysis techniques can be used to identify trends in research communication. She was previously a Young Investigator at the Allen Institute for AI in the Semantic Scholar research group. She completed her PhD in the Department of Biomedical Informatics and Medical Education (BIME) at the University of Washington and also holds degrees in Biomedical Engineering and Physics from Johns Hopkins and MIT respectively.
  • Head of Transformation, SAGE Publishing

Helen has many years experience developing digital products and services for various STM publishers. Helen is Head of Transformation at Sage Publishing and is involved with a number of data and machine learning projects.
